Who is like Thee?

“Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?” (Exodus 15:11)

Hello, my friend…

Today’s verse speaks to a question many of us have asked – whether out loud on purpose, or silently in our hearts. Who are you, God? There is no one I can compare You with! Usually this follows a spectacular rescue in our lives (as it does in our passage today) or some supernatural provision He provides at just the right time; however, many have been prone to ask this after God “lets them down.” It, then, is an accusatory question: “What kind of God would do this?”

I have mentioned before that we like to use Christian-ese language when we speak. We love words like salvation, redemption, sanctification, justification, and the like – but we often don’t truly know the meaning behind those words. They sound good and we heard someone use them in a context or sentence, so we figure we have a basic understanding of them and can, therefore, use them. I encourage you to do some deep study on the words you hear used in conversation, get a true understanding of their meaning, and adjust your speech as necessary. Our words carry power in the spiritual realm, so it is important that we know what we are saying.

Today, for example, we encounter the interrogative word “who”. To most unsaved people, this would signal the beginning of a search for others who match the description of God or Jesus. For example, the unsaved consider Mohammed to be an equal of Jesus – after all, he was a prophet that claimed to represent God to the people. On a closer note, many Christians – God-fearing, church-going believers, think that Satan is the exact enemy of Jesus. I have heard (supposedly) Christian ministers say that Jesus sits on the right hand of God in heaven and (they believe) that Satan sits on God’s left hand. There is a whole teaching on this that I won’t even get into, but suffice it to say that Satan is NO MATCH for the true Son of God. Jesus is the only begotten Son of God, whereas Satan (as the former angel of light) is just a created being. Big difference.

As Moses declared these words (later writing them down), he wasn’t really looking for an equal to Jehovah-God. He was mind-blown at the miracles God had already performed on behalf of the Israelites. He was declaring this in awe of God’s goodness and power. By the way, he would later continue this sense of awe as God watched over, guided, and provided for them all the days of his life. What a mighty God we serve!

The second question: who else is so celebrated in song for their other-beingness. God isn’t just a superhuman. He is not like a really, really holy man to the nth degree. He is high and lifted up. His ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts. He isn’t limited by our human nature or the laws of the universe. Consider this: when we give our hearts to Him, we are made a new creature. We are no longer physically, genetically the same species – we have been made in His image. God stands outside the time and space realm, outside the laws and processes of this terrestrial and celestial realm. Everything we know and discover were spoken into existence by Him. With a word He created all things and set it in motion. There is no equal, He has no rival. Now and forever He reigns. In Him all things (continue to) exist, and without Him nothing would exist that does. Wrap your head around that one!

He continues to work wonders – unexplainable, unrepeatable things – in the lives of men and women around the world. He is able, if need be, to create things that have never existed before. Matthew 18:19 records these words of Jesus: “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.” I heard a Bible scholar explain one time that what Jesus was saying here is, “If two of you agree on earth concerning any issue or need in your life, God will issue a contract for it in heaven.” He went on to explain that if we needed something totally new, something that had never existed before, this contract would be completed by the creation of whatever we need. How awesome is that?

My friend, Moses is celebrating, in this passage, the miraculous provision and deliverance of God for the Israelites. Go back and re-read that entire encounter from the beginning and see how God worked on their behalf. Then, consider that He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Consider, also, that God has no favorites – He is no respecter of persons. He will, however, act on behalf of those who are seeking to serve Him and honor Him with their lives. Not saying He won’t do things for the rest, but these seem to stand at the front of the line. The Bible says that “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.” (2 Chronicles 16:9). That pretty much makes the case right there.

I encourage you to press in to Him, my friend. He is faithful and loving, but He is also just. He will, literally, move heaven and earth on your behalf as His child. You and I only need to remain close to His side and seek to please Him. Do it today.

Be blessed.
